Agilent 1100 LC/MSD mass spectrometer screw size

M3 / M4 · 8 to 16 mm long

The screws used on Agilent 1100 LC/MSD mass spectrometer are M3 and M4 in lengths from 8 to 16 mm.

There are 2 separate fitment records for it, including electrospray nebulizer and spacer: "Screw, M3 x 0.5 x 8 T10"; fragmentor contact holder: " (M3) and spray chamber latch "Screw, M4 x 0.7 PH"; parts list also carries "Screw, M4 x 16" (M4).

Head and drive, as the sources state them: pan head and Torx T10 drive.

2 of the 2 records are marked confirmed, drawn from 1 source (conquerscientific.com).

For reference, M3 is 3 mm across the threads at 0.5 mm pitch. The imperial size people confuse it with: #5-40 (3.18 mm) or #4-40 — neither interchanges with M3.

How to check the screw before you buy

  1. For medical and lab equipment, use the manufacturer's replacement part where one is specified; the thread size here helps identify it, not certify it.
  2. Diameter: across the threads an M3 screw measures about 3 mm with calipers (usually a hair under). This device also uses M4, so measure each screw rather than assuming they match.
  3. Pitch: 0.5 mm from one thread crest to the next (20 crests per centimetre). A thread pitch gauge or the pitch-gauge tool settles it in seconds.
  4. Length: for pan head screws, measure from under the head to the tip (countersunk heads are the exception: they are measured overall).
  5. The records span 8–16 mm, which means different positions take different lengths — match each hole to its own screw.
  6. Driver: the source names a Torx T10 drive. For comparison, standard M3 heads take PH1 (Phillips) or T10 (Torx), or a 2.5 mm hex key.
  7. Tightening: no device-specific torque is published in these records. The site's general figure for M3 is about 80-130 N·cm into metal threads and 35-60 N·cm into plastic bosses; snug it up and stop.

Common mix-ups with M3 / M4

  • Power-tool gearcase and clamshell screws are usually thread-forming (marked "ST") even when the parts list gives an M-size — a normal machine screw of the same size may not hold in the plastic boss.
  • Trijicon RMR (#6-32) and RMRcc (#5-40) mounting screws are imperial, not M3, even though accessory sellers list them as M3.
  • Robot vacuum, air purifier and baby monitor teardowns list screws by driver and length only — length is not a thread size.
  • M4 and 6-32 UNC share a nominal diameter with different pitch — a classic cross-thread in US-market kits.

Questions about Agilent 1100 LC/MSD mass spectrometer screws

What size screw does Agilent 1100 LC/MSD mass spectrometer use?
M3 × 8–12 mm for electrospray nebulizer and spacer: "Screw, M3 x 0.5 x 8 T10"; fragmentor contact holder: "Screw, M3 x 12 mm Pan torx T10"; M4 × 16 mm for spray chamber latch "Screw, M4 x 0.7 PH"; parts list also carries "Screw, M4 x 16".
How long are the screws in Agilent 1100 LC/MSD mass spectrometer?
The records range from 8 to 16 mm depending on the position, so match each screw to its own hole.
What is the thread pitch of an M3 screw?
0.5 mm (coarse), which is the standard pitch for M3 machine screws; a 0.35 mm fine pitch exists but is uncommon. The tap drill is 2.5 mm and the normal clearance hole is 3.4 mm.
What screwdriver do I need for Agilent 1100 LC/MSD mass spectrometer?
The source lists a Torx T10 drive. Standard M3 heads otherwise take PH1 (Phillips) or T10 (Torx), or a 2.5 mm hex key.
Can I use an imperial screw instead of M3?
No. Imperial look-alike: #5-40 (3.18 mm) or #4-40 — neither interchanges with M3. Use a true M3 screw so it does not cross-thread or strip the hole.
Where can I buy replacement screws for Agilent 1100 LC/MSD mass spectrometer?
TechSpareWarehouse (our own store) lists M3 x 8mm, M3 x 10mm and M3 x 12mm, which match lengths in the records above.
