Lenovo laptop screw sizes: mostly M2 and M2.5

Lenovo ThinkPad, IdeaPad, Yoga and Legion laptops use metric screws. M2 (2mm thread) holds the SSD, Wi-Fi card, battery and most of the system board; M2.5 shows up on hinges, display assemblies and many IdeaPad bottom covers. The length changes by series and generation, so use the chart below, then the model listings.

  • Most common size: M2 x 3mm (1,006 Lenovo models)
  • M.2 SSD: M2 x 3mm, M2 x 2.5mm or M2 x 2mm, depending on the model
  • Legion 5 bottom cover: M2 x 4mm on every generation in our data
  • Driver: Phillips #0 / #1

Lost a screw from a ThinkPad, IdeaPad or Legion? Lenovo publishes a Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) for almost every model, and each removal step prints the screw size, colour, quantity and whether it is nylon-coated. We read those tables into our laptop screw fitment database: 1,454 Lenovo models from 866 Lenovo service documents. This page sums up what Lenovo actually uses, series by series, and links every Lenovo-specific screw listing we have.

Lenovo screw size chart by series

The two most common sizes for each part, with the number of models that use them. "M2 x 3.5mm" means an M2 thread 3.5mm long (Lenovo prints it as M2 x L3.5).

From OEM Lenovo service manuals (structured screw tables only). Series groups are by model name; a dash means no model in that group prints a size for that part. Always confirm with your own model: two generations of the same series can differ by half a millimetre.

Patterns worth knowing:

  • ThinkPads are almost all M2 inside. M2 x 3mm to M2 x 5mm covers the system board, battery and SSD on most T, E, L and P models. M2.5 appears on display hinges (M2.5 x 4mm is common on T and X series).
  • Older ThinkPad T-series keyboards use long screws: the manuals list M2 x 10mm to M2 x 14mm for the keyboard.
  • IdeaPads lean on M2.5 x 7mm for the bottom cover and M2 x 6mm for the battery.
  • The M.2 SSD screw is not one size. Lenovo SSD screws in our data: M2 x 3mm (210 models), M2 x 2mm (120), M2 x 2.5mm (103), M2 x 3.5mm (95). More in the M.2 SSD screw size guide.

How to find the exact screw for your Lenovo

  1. Read the label. The model name (for example "ThinkPad T14 Gen 2") and the machine type (a four-character code such as 20W0) are printed under the laptop.
  2. Open the Hardware Maintenance Manual. Search "[your model] hardware maintenance manual" on Lenovo's support site. In the removal steps, each screw is listed as size, colour and quantity, for example M2 x L3.5, Black, Nylon-coated (4).
  3. Match colour and head as well as size. Lenovo uses black and silver screws (73% of the colour-marked entries are black). A flat-headed screw in a recessed hole and a wafer head on a flat seat are not interchangeable even at the same size.
  4. No manual? Measure. Calipers across the threads: about 2.0mm is M2, 2.5mm is M2.5. Then measure the length under the head. See M2 vs M2.5 laptop screws.
  5. Captive screws stay put. Many ThinkPad and Yoga bottom-cover screws are captive (held in the cover by a clip). If one is missing, a standard screw of the same thread and length can usually stand in.

Lenovo laptop screw FAQ

What size screws do Lenovo laptops use?

Mostly M2 and M2.5 metric screws. In the 866 Lenovo service documents in our fitment database (1,454 models), 98% of models use M2 screws and 88% use M2.5. The most common single size is M2 x 3mm; M3 appears mainly on 2.5-inch drive brackets.

What size are Lenovo bottom cover screws?

It varies by series: IdeaPads most often use M2.5 x 7mm or M2 x 6mm, Yoga models M2 x 3.5mm or M2 x 6mm, Legion models M2 x 4mm plus longer M2 screws at the back, and newer ThinkPads M2 x 3mm to M2 x 3.5mm (many ThinkPad cover screws are captive and stay in the cover).

What size screws does the Lenovo Legion 5 use?

Every Legion 5 generation in our data uses M2 x 4mm screws on the bottom cover (with a few longer M2 screws, 8mm to 12mm depending on the generation) and M2 x 4.5mm for the battery and heat sink. The SSD screw changed between generations: M2 x 3mm on the 2020 Gen 5, M2 x 4.5mm on Gen 6 and Gen 7, and M2 x 1.8mm on the 15-inch Gen 8; some models also list M2 x 2mm or M2 x 1.8mm for a second slot.

What screwdriver do I need for a Lenovo laptop?

A Phillips #0 or #1 for almost all of them. Of the Lenovo screw rows that print a drive type, 99% are Phillips; Torx is rare.

Are Lenovo laptop screws nylon coated?

Many are. Lenovo manuals mark about 70% of the screw entries in our data as nylon-coated, which helps keep them from loosening. The thread size is the same as an uncoated screw of that size, so a replacement fits the same hole.

How do I find the exact screw size for my Lenovo model?

Find your model or machine type on the label under the laptop, then open the Lenovo Hardware Maintenance Manual for it. Each removal step lists the screw as, for example, "M2 x L3.5, Black, Nylon-coated" with the quantity. If you have no manual, measure the thread diameter and the length under the head with calipers.
