Valve Steam Deck (LCD) screw size

M1.2 / M1.6 / M2 · 2 to 9 mm long

The screws used on Valve Steam Deck (LCD) are M1.2, M1.6 and M2 in lengths from 2 to 9 mm.

There are 6 separate fitment records for it, including type 8 machine screw, 1.2 mm thread diameter, 0.25 mm pitch, 2 mm thread length, used in S (M1.2), small internal case screws (M1.2) and official iFixit-measured screw ID guide lists multiple M1.6 fastener types used throughout (M1.6), plus 3 more in the table below.

6 of the 6 records are marked confirmed, drawn from 1 source (ifixit.com).

M1.2 means a 1.2 mm nominal diameter with a 0.25 mm thread pitch. Imperial look-alike: #0-80 UNF (1.52 mm) is the closest imperial screw, but it is bigger — not a substitute.

How to check the screw before you buy

  1. Phone and wearable screws are tiny and often differ by fractions of a millimetre between positions; keep each one next to the hole it came from.
  2. Diameter: across the threads an M1.2 screw measures about 1.2 mm with calipers (usually a hair under). This device also uses M1.6 / M2, so measure each screw rather than assuming they match.
  3. Pitch: 0.25 mm from one thread crest to the next (40 crests per centimetre). A thread pitch gauge or the pitch-gauge tool settles it in seconds.
  4. Length: measure from under the head to the tip for pan, button, wafer and cap heads; countersunk (flat) heads are measured overall.
  5. The records span 2–9 mm, which means different positions take different lengths — match each hole to its own screw.
  6. Driver: the source does not name the drive. Standard M1.2 heads take PH000 / JIS 00 for Phillips and T1–T2 for Torx; a bit that fits loosely will cam out and strip the head.
  7. Tightening: no device-specific torque is published in these records. The site's general figure for M1.2 is about 5-8 N·cm into metal threads and 3-5 N·cm into plastic bosses; snug it up and stop.

Common mix-ups with M1.2 / M1.6 / M2

  • Driver size is not thread size: Steam Deck's eight screw types span M1.2 to M2 while sharing similar drive heads.
  • Steam Deck backplate screws are M1.6, not M2 as commonly assumed — check the iFixit Screw ID guide before ordering.
  • Xbox Series X internal chassis screws are M3, not M2 (confirmed on iFixit) — a widespread misconception.

Questions about Valve Steam Deck (LCD) screws

What size screw does Valve Steam Deck (LCD) use?
M1.2 × 2 mm for type 8 machine screw, 1.2 mm thread diameter, 0.25 mm pitch, 2 mm thread length, used in Steam Deck internal assembly; M1.2 × 2 mm for small internal case screws; M1.6 × 3–9 mm for official iFixit-measured screw ID guide lists multiple M1.6 fastener types used throughout the Steam Deck: Type 1 M1.6x9 plastic thread-forming, Type 2 M1.6x5 machine screw, Type 4 M1.6x4.5 plastic thread-forming, Type 5 M1.6x3 machine screw, Type 7 M1.6x4 plastic thread-forming; M1.6 × 3–9 mm for case and board screws in several lengths; M2 × 2.2–3.5 mm for official iFixit screw ID guide lists Type 3 M2x3.5 machine screw and Type 6 M2x2.2 machine screw used inside the Steam Deck; M2 × 2.2–3.5 mm f.
How long are the screws in Valve Steam Deck (LCD)?
The records range from 2 to 9 mm depending on the position, so match each screw to its own hole.
What is the thread pitch of an M1.2 screw?
0.25 mm (coarse), which is the standard pitch for M1.2 machine screws. The tap drill is 0.95 mm and the normal clearance hole is 1.4 mm.
What screwdriver do I need for Valve Steam Deck (LCD)?
The sources do not name the drive. For M1.2, Phillips heads normally take PH000 / JIS 00 and Torx heads T1–T2.
Can I use an imperial screw instead of M1.2?
No. Imperial look-alike: #0-80 UNF (1.52 mm) is the closest imperial screw, but it is bigger — not a substitute. Use a true M1.2 screw so it does not cross-thread or strip the hole.
Where can I buy replacement screws for Valve Steam Deck (LCD)?
TechSpareWarehouse (our own store) lists M1.2 x 2mm, M1.6 x 3mm and M1.6 x 4mm, which match lengths in the records above.
