Ultimaker Original heated bed / Z-stage upgrade kit screw size

M3 / M4 / M6 · 10 to 25 mm long

Our records put Ultimaker Original heated bed / Z-stage upgrade kit on M3, M4 and M6 screws in lengths from 10 to 25 mm.

There are 3 separate fitment records for it, including assembly manual specifies M3x25mm screws for frame mounting and M3x10mm screws for Z-stage (M3), 8 x M4x10 bolts used to secure bearings in the Z-stage assembly (M4) and M6 washer used with Knurled Nut Platform, springs and countersunk M3x20mm screws in the Z- (M6).

Head and drive, as the sources state them: flat / countersunk head.

3 of the 3 records are marked confirmed, drawn from 1 source (um-support-files.ultimaker.com).

M3 means a 3 mm nominal diameter with a 0.5 mm thread pitch. Imperial look-alike: #5-40 (3.18 mm) or #4-40 — neither interchanges with M3.

How to check the screw before you buy

  1. Into printed plastic, the screw either self-taps or needs a heat-set insert; machine screws straight into plastic strip easily.
  2. Diameter: across the threads an M3 screw measures about 3 mm with calipers (usually a hair under). This device also uses M4 / M6, so measure each screw rather than assuming they match.
  3. Pitch: 0.5 mm from one thread crest to the next (20 crests per centimetre). A thread pitch gauge or the pitch-gauge tool settles it in seconds.
  4. Length: the source describes a countersunk (flat) head, and those are measured overall, from the top of the head to the tip.
  5. The records span 10–25 mm, which means different positions take different lengths — match each hole to its own screw.
  6. Driver: the source does not name the drive. Standard M3 heads take PH1 for Phillips and T10 for Torx, and a 2.5 mm hex key for socket heads; a bit that fits loosely will cam out and strip the head.
  7. Tightening: no device-specific torque is published in these records. The site's general figure for M3 is about 80-130 N·cm into metal threads and 35-60 N·cm into plastic bosses; snug it up and stop.

Common mix-ups with M3 / M4 / M6

  • Suunto dive computer service manuals reference strap pins and battery compartment springs but do not explicitly cite a metric screw thread size in the sections reviewed; do not infer M2/M2.5 fitment for Suunto dive computer straps without direct confirmation.
  • US-made pinball machines (Williams/Bally/Stern) overwhelmingly use imperial UTS threads (#6-32, #8-32, #10-32); explicit metric threads only appear on newer/import components such as Jersey Jack Pinball's Hobbit Smaug assembly (M3).
  • 19-inch rack rails use three incompatible thread standards that share the same square hole: M6, 10-32 UNF and 12-24 UNC. Cage nuts for all of them look identical in a parts bin.

Questions about Ultimaker Original heated bed / Z-stage upgrade kit screws

What size screw does Ultimaker Original heated bed / Z-stage upgrade kit use?
M3 × 10–25 mm for assembly manual specifies M3x25mm screws for frame mounting and M3x10mm screws for Z-stage assembly, plus M3 nuts and M3 locknuts throughout the build; M4 × 10 mm for 8 x M4x10 bolts used to secure bearings in the Z-stage assembly; M6 for M6 washer used with Knurled Nut Platform, springs and countersunk M3x20mm screws in the Z-stage build.
How long are the screws in Ultimaker Original heated bed / Z-stage upgrade kit?
The records range from 10 to 25 mm depending on the position, so match each screw to its own hole.
What is the thread pitch of an M3 screw?
0.5 mm (coarse), which is the standard pitch for M3 machine screws; a 0.35 mm fine pitch exists but is uncommon. The tap drill is 2.5 mm and the normal clearance hole is 3.4 mm.
What screwdriver do I need for Ultimaker Original heated bed / Z-stage upgrade kit?
The sources do not name the drive. For M3, Phillips heads normally take PH1 and Torx heads T10; socket heads take a 2.5 mm hex key.
Can I use an imperial screw instead of M3?
No. Imperial look-alike: #5-40 (3.18 mm) or #4-40 — neither interchanges with M3. Use a true M3 screw so it does not cross-thread or strip the hole.
Where can I buy replacement screws for Ultimaker Original heated bed / Z-stage upgrade kit?
TechSpareWarehouse (our own store) lists M3 x 10mm, M3 x 12mm and M3 x 14mm, which match lengths in the records above.
