The Good News: Threads Are Universal
Nearly every laptop on earth uses standard metric threads — M1.2, M1.4, M1.6, M2, M2.5 and M3. An M2 x 4mm screw from an HP has identical threads to an M2 x 4mm from a Dell, Lenovo or Acer. In that sense, yes: laptop screws are interchangeable when the size matches exactly.
The Catch: Length and Head Are Model-Specific
Brands use different lengths in different locations. Dell XPS bottom covers take M2 x 8mm; Acer Nitro 5 covers take M2.5 x 6mm and 8mm; HP EliteBooks hide an unusual M2.5 x 11mm. Put a donor screw that's 2mm too long into the wrong hole and it bottoms out against the battery or board — the #1 way "free" screws total laptops. Head style matters too: a pan head where a countersunk flat head belongs will bulge the cover; a standard head where a wafer head belongs can press into the keyboard.
The Safe Interchange Rules
